October 2021 – What to Expect

October is finally here, and we are starting off the month on a warm and mild note! Our high on Friday at MSP was 79°. The average high temperature for October 1st is 66°, that’s 13° higher than normal, and we can expect a trend of above-normal temperatures for the rest of the month, according to the Climate Prediction Center. The graphic below is the temperature outlook for the month of October as issued by the CPC. All of Minnesota, along with the upper midwest, is in the above-average temperature zone. All good news for people who enjoy the warm weather and want to hold off on the cold.

Precipitation:

In terms of precipitation, the CPC has us in an “above-average” category for the month of October. A category that is excellent news considering the drought conditions we have been experiencing since the summer months. The graphic below shows the precipitation outlook for October for the Midwest. Areas without shading, such as portions of extreme eastern Wisconsin and western North Dakota, are under an equal chance category. For October, average rainfall totals are around 2.58″ for the month.

October 1st Temperatures:

Over the past ten years, we have seen a rollercoaster of 50s all the way up to the upper 70s, like 2021. The graphic below shows the high temperatures recorded at MSP Airport on October 1st through the past ten years. Keep in mind that the average high temperature for the 1st day of October is 66°. With that said, the only times we have been “near normal” were in 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Sunrise and Sunset:

With the year starting to wind down, it is also important to note that sunrise and sunset times will also be decreasing as well. By October 15th, sunrise will be at 7:29 AM, with sunset at 6:27 PM. By Halloween, that sunrise time becomes 7:50 AM and the sunset will be at 6:02 PM.
