A Mix Of Precip Expected This Weekend Throughout Minnesota

OVERVIEW: After seeing some very dry weather, precipitation-wise, the last few days, we are starting to see some precipitation enter into the state with different forms for all. An air mass typically seen in spring is in place, and it will be well-known this weekend.

BIG PICTURE: Throughout the state this weekend, multiple types of precipitation will be present. For the Twin Cities and areas south and southwest, we will see mostly rain showers with a brief period of snow with a wintry mix. Areas off towards west-central Minnesota have the chance of seeing anywhere from 4″ – 10″ of snow. Ice accumulations of one to two-tenths of an inch are possible across central and south-central MN into far western parts of Wisconsin. Even at this moment on Friday evening, there is still uncertainty in regards to the precipitation types and totals due to the warm air mixing in with this precipitation event. Changes in precipitation totals will be possible this weekend. We have included the expected snowfall forecast from the National Weather Service underneath the alerts section.

ALERTS: Below are the latest weather alerts as of 9:00 PM on Friday night. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for parts of central Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, with a Winter Storm Warning for parts of western Minnesota, northern Minnesota, and the eastern Dakotas for this precip mess. TOTALS: The graphics below from the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities show the predicted ice and snowfall forecast as of Friday afternoon/evening. Keep in mind that these forecasts are subject to change based on the amount of warm air that gets into this system which could limit the snowfall-making potential and ice-making potential. Needless to say, this system is definitely one to stay ahead of by preparing for slick conditions on the roads and heavier snow towards northern Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas.
