Our first winter storm is in the books and brings a record with it as well. Tuesday, October 20th, 2020, will go down in the books as Minnesota’s earliest 3″ + snowfall ever and the 2nd largest October daily snowfall at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. These record books go back 140 years as well!

Out at MSP, we received 7.4″ of snowfall for the day, which, as previously mentioned, will go down as the second snowiest October day on record behind the Halloween storm of 1991, which was 8.2″ of snow. In fact, we even had a report of almost 11″ of snow off towards Western Minnesota in Sedan, with 10.80″ of snowfall on the ground. The graphics below show the snowfall totals across central Minnesota as well as some of the more notable totals.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to approximately 493 crashes statewide from 11 AM – 20:30 this evening. 48 of those 493 crashes involved some form of injury. Thankfully, no deaths were reported as a result of this storm. This storm also presented us with 345 vehicles spun out and went off the road along with 17 jackknifed semis.

Even though we are only in the middle of October, several cities, including New Hope, Faribault, and Bloomington, have declared snow emergencies. Be sure to check if your city has been placed under a snow emergency, as parking may be impacted as a result.
